Patellar Instability

The kneecap is designed to fit in the center of this groove, and slide evenly within the groove during the knee movements. But due to biomechanical alterations , in some patients knee cap tends to slip outwards during the the knee movements.It is called patellar instability.

Symptoms

  • Kneecap (patella) moves to the outside of the knee
  • Anterior knee pain and tenderness
  • Hypermobile patella (you can move the kneecap excessively )
  • Apprehension +

Investigations

  • Your symptoms plus a doctor's examination of the knee (Q-angle)
  • Special knee x-rays
  • MRI scan/CT scan

Conservative

  • Physical Therapy
  • Bracing and straping

Operative

  • Medial soft tissue reconstruction surgeries (MPFL Reconstruction)      /Lateral soft tissue release Bony realignment surgeries.
