Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty

Reverse shoulder replacement surgery is used for people who have

  • Massive rotator cuff tears with severe arm weakness
  • Severe arthritis and rotator cuff tearing (cuff tear arthropathy)
  • Previous failed shoulder replacement.
  • In reverse shoulder replacement, the socket and metal ball are reversed. Which means a metal ball is fixed to the shoulder bone and a plastic socket is fixed to the upper part of the arm bone. Deltoid muscle of the arm allows the patient to lift the shoulder instead of rotator cuff muscles.

Complications

  • Infection
  • Prosthesis problems - Excessive wear, loosening, or dislocation, which may require additional surgery (revision arthroplasty)
  • Previous failed shoulder replacement.
  • Nerve injuries.
